Celebrating and encouraging older adults to 'Champion Your Health'

The image promotes Older Americans Month with tips on health, wellness, nutrition, and social connections from the Camarillo Health Care District.

We celebrate older adults every day — they are always in our hearts and on our minds. May, recognized as Older Americans Month, gives us a special opportunity to shine a light on their contributions, reflect on their impact, and highlight ways we can support their health and well-being.

This year’s theme, established by the Administration for Community Living, is “Champion Your Health.” At Camarillo Health Care District, this is something we are deeply committed to supporting.

The theme emphasizes prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as key to healthy aging. It encourages each of us to take an active role in our health — advocating for ourselves, staying up to date with preventive care, and making informed choices that support independence and quality of life.

Throughout the year, we offer a variety of classes, programs, and services designed to help you do just that. Whether you’re looking to stay active, learn something new, or connect with others, we’re here to support you in championing your health.

Taking Personal Responsibility

An older woman is playing a SMARTfit game, hitting targets on a panel with a stick, focused on her score and time.
Patty participates in SMARTfit training.

Patty, an avid hiker who has stayed active her whole life, is a great example of someone who "champions her health." She turned to our SMARTfit fall prevention program at age 75 to maintain her coordination and balance. She attended 30-minute sessions twice a week and is now on our interest list for BALANCEfit. She is committed to health and wellness, is taking personal responsibility and employing preventative measures to stay healthy and active.

“I thought to myself, ‘I need to do anything I can to keep my balance and continue hiking,’” she said. “I’m also interested in programs that help improve my mental capacity and memory.”

Some of Patty's favorite hikes in the area include:

  • Santa Rosa Valley Park, 10241 Hill Canyon Road, Camarillo
  • Sycamore Canyon Trail in Point Mugu State Park, 9000 W. Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu
  • Wildwood Regional Park, 928 W. Avenida De Los Arboles, Thousand Oaks

Camarillo Health Care District is committed to promoting community health through service, education and empowerment.
