Caregiver Training, Education & Support
Have you found yourself thrust into the role of primary caregiver for someone you love? You have just joined an elite and very special group of people. You are now someone who loves more deeply than you thought possible and who gives much more than you thought you had left to give. At the same time, you most likely are exhausted, scared, angry and maybe even sick yourself.
The staff at the Wellness & Caregiver Center of Ventura County (Center) understand that being a caregiver is not easy, fun or fair. The Center was designed intentionally with a calm, sophisticated interior to offer a break from institutional, clinical settings, and promote an ideal setting for learning, knowledge comprehension, retention, hope and renewal.
All services offered at the Center are FREE, and are provided through funding partnerships with Ventura County Area Agency on Aging. The Center is the only one of its kind in Ventura County and we encourage you to take advantage of the many free educational and supportive opportunities to make lasting changes in your quality of life.
Caregiver Data
We want to share with you some very important health effects that caregiving has on the caregiver.
- The impact of chronic disease is a one-two punch; it affects both patient and caregiver
- The physical impact of providing care can lead to patient abuse, self abuse and neglect, and the overarching effect of living in a continual “overwhelmed” state
- The health effects on caregivers caring for chronic disease patients, unwittingly contributes to the creation of a “second-generation” chronic disease patient
- 25% of women caregivers have health problems as a result of caregiving activities
- Women who spend one or more hours a week caring for an ill/disable spouse have an increased risk of heart disease
- 2 out of 3 older women don’t seek preventative health services due to lack of information and high out-of-pocket costs
- 40% of caregivers die before the person they’re caring for
There is hope here, and we encourage you to call 1-800-900-8582 to speak with our Care Coordinator who is available to chat over the phone, via email, or in the privacy and comfort of your own home. Or stop by the Center anytime, Monday through Friday, for a private tour. There is no need to wait another day, and we look forward to meeting you!
